You can still stack any card on the next rank up, but only same-suit runs move together — so every off-suit placement is a small debt you will eventually have to repay. Most experienced players consider this the best balance of challenge and winnability in Spider.

Think of off-suit stacking as borrowing: a heart placed on a spade run keeps the column alive but freezes the cards beneath it. Prefer in-suit builds, and when you must go off-suit, do it on columns you have already given up on.
